Level 5: Support

Level 5: Support

1. Behavior Intervention Plan - Some students are in need of the top tier of support, and one strategy that can be used is a behavior intervention plan.  While as a teacher, this might not be my responsibility, I think that it is very important to stay involved with the students, and be aware of the supports that the student needs.  A student at this level does not need to be marginalized, but rather given the same respect that is given to all students.  It is also important to know what expectations are set for the student in order to help facilitate success of the student, and accommodations may be needed inside my classroom to ensure the student is given the chance to show responsibility, respect, and accountability.

2. IEPs, 504s, and SST - In many cases a teacher might not be directly involved in the meeting, however I will make an effort to be there for my students whenever I have the opportunity. What I will do is make sure that I understand my students, what their specific needs are, and make accommodations as necessary.  It is also important to communicate with the student, as well as their case managers and parents, about the best possible strategies for the student as an individual.

3. PBIS - This school wide function requires the active involvement of the administration, teachers, counselors, and other support personnel.  One of the focuses is to understand the root of the behavior problem, and corrective measures are not negative, but instead encourage positive behaviors.  Communication is key, as is respect for the student as a person.  Rather than solely key in on what the student is doing wrong, the goal is to understand the underlying cause and help the student change the behavior in a positive manner.  Again, the focus is the student and having respect for the student and their feelings and actions is a key in successful implementation of PBIS.
